The ultimate Knuckles trek is six days and about 68 kilometres, from a cave night at Duwili Ella to the Five Peaks, Kotaganga, and a village day in Heeloya. You also sleep in a simple cardamom hut and in a cabana. It is moderate to challenging, from 400 US dollars, and it must be booked at least two weeks ahead because of camping permits. Pickup is in Kandy.
Each day changes the kind of night you sleep in and the kind of path you walk. The wildest night is the cave by Duwili Ella. A later night uses an old cardamom hut in the forest. The Kotaganga falls and the Five Peaks come in the middle, when your legs already know the trail. Heeloya closes the trip with a family meal instead of another summit. Meals on the trek, camping gear, leech socks, and permits are included.
Note: Book at least two weeks ahead so camping permits can be filed.
Leave Kandy and walk toward the Duwili side of the range. Camp begins the pattern for the week: early starts, cooked trail meals, and a short evening.
Spend the day on the waterfall chain and sleep in the cave shelter beside the falls.
Cross forest streams and smaller falls, including the fall known as Ginikuru when the water allows, and sleep in a simple cardamom hut.
Walk the Kotaganga chain and the grassland above it, watching for the upward spray in the first gorge.
Climb the five summits and sleep at the cabana near the forest.
Walk to Heeloya, eat with a host family, and drive back to Kandy.
