The Kotaganga trail is a one-day waterfall walk from Kandy into the Knuckles, visiting the chain of falls above Thangappuwa. Wind in the gorge can blow the spray of the first fall back upward, so the water seems to vanish before it lands. You are back in Kandy the same evening. Shoes with grip matter more than speed on this path.
Kotaganga is a side valley of the Knuckles, not a roadside cascade. The day links several falls, then opens onto the Kotaganga plains, a pocket of grassland inside the forest. Rocks stay slick even in a dry week. We turn around if a stream is too high to cross safely rather than forcing the full chain.
Note: Pickup in Kandy at 6:30 a.m. Drop-off Kandy, same evening.
Drive from Kandy toward Thangappuwa and start walking within a few minutes of the trailhead. Follow the stream past the main falls, pause on the grassland, and return by the same valley to the vehicle. The exact number of falls you reach depends on water level.
