The Five Peaks trek is a private one-day hike from Kandy along the fist-shaped ridge that gives the Knuckles their name. You walk about 16 kilometres through cloud forest and open grass, eat a packed lunch on the trail, and return to Kandy the same evening. Most groups take eight to ten hours door to door.
The drive from Kandy climbs toward Corbett's Gap and ends at Thangappuwa, where the walking starts. The path is known locally as a leopard trail because the cats still use these forests, though a sighting is rare and never promised. After a stream crossing the trees open onto the ridge. Each of the five summits is a short pull separated by meadow. The walk down stops at a mountain stream before the vehicle home.
Note: About 16 km on foot. Pickup in Kandy at 6:30 a.m. Drop-off Kandy, same evening.
Leave Kandy at 6:30 a.m. and drive to Thangappuwa. Walk the forest path to the first summit, continue across the ridge, and stop for lunch where the view is widest. Descend via a stream, meet the vehicle, and return to Kandy in the evening. Distance about 16 km.

Thangappuwa, Knuckles Conservation Forest
Open in Google MapsIt is a moderate full day, not a technical climb. There is no rope work. The length, about 16 km, is what tires people, especially the steps between the middle summits.
The forest holds leopards. Seeing one on a day hike is uncommon. The guide will talk about signs on the path rather than promise an animal.
