Knuckles Conservation Forest permits, explained

Most Knuckles treks that enter the Conservation Forest need a Forest Department permit. Guided days include that paperwork. Cave camping needs extra notice.

Day walks versus camping

If the path enters the Knuckles Conservation Forest, a Forest Department permit is required. On a guided day walk that paperwork is included. You do not need to visit an office in Kandy first.

Overnight cave camping is different. Those dates need a camping permit requested at least two weeks ahead. That is why camping pages on this site ask for dates before a price is confirmed.

Why groups stay private

Knuckles departures here are private: your party, one English-speaking guide, and a Kandy pickup on most days. That keeps the permit, the vehicle, and the lunch count tied to one group instead of a mixed departure.

Questions

Do Pekoe Trail stages need a Knuckles permit?

No. Pekoe stages around Hantana, Galaha, and Horton Plains sit outside the Knuckles Conservation Forest and use different access rules.
